1. Find a tandem partner

A great way to learn a new language is to team up with a tandem partner - that is a native speaker of the language you want to learn who also wants to learn your native language. This is a perfect win-win situation. It lets you:

  • Get input on grammar and pronunciation from an expert.
  • Meet new people in a lively and creative way.
  • Get direct insights about another culture.

Extra tip: Agree on clear goals with your tandem partner and be sure to switch back and forth between the languages so both sides are benefiting.

2. Integrate language use into your everyday activities

Take advantage of every chance you can to use the new language in what you do:

  • Speak the language with your host parents and kids.
  • Watch local TV shows, YouTube vidoes or films to improve your understanding of the spoken language.

3. Make clever use of different learning resources

There are all kinds of books, online courses and apps for learning a new language. Look for some that are fun for you to use.

Extra tip: Write down words and phrases that you hear regularly in a vocabularly list and focus on learning these.

4. Track your success and stay motivated

Set realistic goals for yourself. For example:

  • Choose a certain area in everyday life and learn the related vocabulary (like shopping or travel, for example).
  • Then go ahead and try out having a conversaltion using your new knowledge.
